Question 522551: ellen and kate raced on their bicycles to the libary after school.They both left school at 3:00 P.M. and bicycled along the same path. ellen rode at a speed of 12 miles per hour and kate rode at 9 miles per hour. ellen got to the libary 15 minutes before kate. at what time did ellen get to the libary?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
ellen 12 mph
Kate 9 mph
Ellen reached early by 15 minutes=>1/4 hour
time kate-time Ellen = 1/4
t=d/r
x/9-x/12=1/4
multiply equation by the LCD 36
4x-3x=36/4
x=9
d= 9
ellen speed = 12 mph
time = 9/12=>3/4 hours
So Ellen reached at 3.45 pm
