Question 522520: A car leaves New Orleans on the westbound road traveling 60mph. Thirty minutes later, another car leaves heading down the same road traveling 80mph. How far from New Orleans will the second car to pads up the first one?
Answer by oberobic(2304) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
d = r*t is the basic distance equation.
.
The first car:
d = 60 mph * t
.
The second car:
d = 80 mph * (t-1/2)
.
At the point the faster car overtakes the slower car, they will have traveled the same distance.
So, d=d.
.
60t = 80(t-1/2)
60t = 80t - 80/2
-20t = -40
t = 2
.
In 2 hr the faster car will overtake the slower car.
The faster car will have traveled for 1 1/2 hr = 3/2 hr.
.
Check the distance to be sure.
60*2 = 120
80*3/2 = 120
.
Done.
