Question 520711: A ship leaves port and sails 12 kilometers west and then 19 kilometers north How far is the ship from port?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
first it travels west
then north
it takes a turn at right angles
so the route forms a right triangle.
12 & 19 are the legs and the actual distance the hypotenuse.
use pythagoras theorem
12^2+19^2=d^2
144+361=d^2
505=d^2
d=sqrt(505)
d=22.47 km
