Let d = the distance walked (and rode by bus)

Write a time equation, time = dist/speed
:
bus time + walk time = 3 hrs
+ = 3
multiply by 10
10* + 10* = 10(3)
cancel out the denominators
d + 5d = 30
6d = 30
d = 30/6
d = 5 miles walked

5/10 = .5 hrs
