I need help explaining this to my daughter, It has been a long time since I did algebra word problems. Any help is greatly appreciated

distance = 1.5 miles + 1.2 miles
distance = 2.7 miles

time = 28 min + 10 min
time = 38 min
.
Average speed = total distance / total time.

Note that "miles per minute" tells you to divide miles by minutes.
