Question 509063: During the trip, Brent had visibility problems due to the fog. After 1 1/2 hours of fog cleared he was able to increase his speed by 34 mph, driving another 41/2 hours. If the entire trip was 297 miles, how fast was he traveling in the fog?
Tried to figure it out by turning the fractions to decimals, I think that there are just to many steps and I was unsure of how to start what. I know the formula rt=d, but that didnt help much.
Thank you!
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
speed in fog = x mph
speed later = x+34 mph
Distance in fog = 3/2 *x
Distance after fog cleared = 9/2 *(x+34)
Distance I + distance II = 297
3/2 x +9/2*(x+34)= 297
Multiply by 2
3x+9(x+34) = 297*2
3x+9x+306= 594
12x=594-306
12x=288
/12
x=24 mph speed in fog
speed on clear road = 58 mph
