The sum of the ages of a woman and her son is 36 years. Six years from now the woman will be twice as old as her son. How old is each now?
---
Equations:
w + s = 36
(w+6) = 2(s+6)
---
Substitute for "w" and solve for "s":
36-s+6 = 2s+12
3s = 30
s = 10 yrs old (son's age now)
---
Solve for "w":
w + s = 36
w + 10 = 36
w = 26 (mother's age now)
