Question 502940: a man drove 5 hours. On the return trip his speed was 9 mph less and the trip took 6 hrs. What was his speed each way?
Answer by jrb1965(16) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Distance = Rate * Time
D1 = D2
D1 = S1 * T1
D2 = S2 * T2
so S1 * T1 = S2 * T2
S2 = S1 - 9
T1 = 5
T2 = 6
so S1 * 5 = (S1 - 9) * 6
5S1 = 6S1 - 54
combine the S1 terms
S1 = 54 MPH
S2 = 45 MPH
D1 = D2 = 270 Miles
