Question 501562: A bug travels 5 inches per minute. How long before the bug completly circles the 14 feet by 20 feet room. I know the answer is 163.2 minutes or 2.72 hour, the answers are in our book but our teacher wants us to explain and I do not understand how to get those results. I have tried so far 14*20=280/5=56 14*20=280*12=3360/5=672 20*12=240/5=48 14*12=168/5=33.6 5*12=60/20=3 I simply so not understand this problem.

Answer by Maths68(1474)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
This room is a type of rectangle whose Breath is 14 feet and Length is 20 feet.
First we will find the Perimeter of this rectangle
Perimeter of rectangle = 2L + 2B
Perimeter of rectangle = 2(20) + 2(14)
Perimeter of rectangle = 40 + 28
Perimeter of rectangle = 68 feet
Here we change the feet into inches, we know that 1 feet = 12 inches
Perimeter of rectangle = 68 * 12 = 816 inches
So Bug has to cover 816 inches we are to know how long it will take?
Now, it is given that Bug travels with the speed of 5 inches/minute
We also know formula for calculating speed is
speed = Distance / time
Here
Speed = 5inches / minute
time = ? we are to calculate
distance = 816
Put the above values in the formula
5 = 816 / time
time*5 = 816
time=816/5
time=163.20 minutes
to change the time into hours from minutes we have to divide the time by 60
time = 163.20/60
time = 2.72 hours
I hope above explaination will satisfy your Maths teacher !!!1
