"Through a combination of sight, sound, and smell a rabbit can detect a fox at 42 yards. When the rabbit detects the fox, it runs immediately straight to its hole. If the fox can run twice as fast as the rabbit, what is the maximum distance from its hole that a rabbit can safely venture? Assume that the rabbit escapes if they arrive at the hole at the same time."

The fox is 42 yds from the rabbit.
For a tie, the fox runs 2x as far as the rabbit while gaining the 42 yds.
--> The rabbit is <= 42 yds from its hole, and the fox is 84 yds from the hole.
--> 42 yds max

Since the fox runs twice as fast, he can cover twice the distance in the same amount of time. If the rabbit and fox start out 42 yards apart, the fox can run 84 yards in the time it takes the rabbit to arrive at his hole. Therefore, the maximum safe distance is 84 - 42 = 42 yards.

The maximum safest distance that the rabbit can venture from its hole = , or 1/2 the distance that the fox is from the hole.

For example, If the fox is say 2 yards from the hole, the rabbit would have to be half that distance, or 1 yard from the hole in order to get to the hole in the same time that the fox gets there, and escape into the hole.
