He is 5 km from the starting point. You use the Pythagorean theorem to solve the problem because he is making a right triangle. The formula for that is a^2+b^2=c^2. What you are looking for is c^2. So you just plug in the 3 and 4 (3^2+4^2=25)and then square root it.
