An airplane flies 1200 miles into the wind in 3 hours. The return trip take 2 hours. Find the speed of the airplane without a wind and the speed of the wind.
**
x=speed of airplane without wind
c=speed of wind
..
Forward trip:
distance/speed=travel time
1200/(x-c)=3
Return trip:
1200/(x+c)=2
..
3x-3c=1200
2x+2c=1200
..
6x-6c=2400
6x+6c=3600
add
12x=6000
x=500 mph
2c=1200-2x=200
c=100
ans:
speed of airplane without wind=500 mph
speed of wind=100 mph
