Answer by htmentor(1343)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A small hose can fill a swimming pool in 8 hours. A large hose can fill the same pool in 5 hours. How long will it take to fill the pool when both hoses are used?
==================================
The fill rate for the small hose = 1 pool/8 hrs
The fill rate for the large hose = 1 pool/5 hrs
Working together the rate is:
1/8 + 1/5 = 5/40 + 8/40 = 13/40 pool/hr -> 40/13 = 3 1/13 hours (per pool)
