Question 475255: amadeus could travel 760 miles in twice the time it took his nemesis Saleri to travel 220 miles. If amadeus's rate exceeded that of Salieri by 40 miles per hour, find the rates and times of both men.
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Saleri x 220 miles
Amadeus x 40 760 miles

t=d/r
2*(220 / x) = 760 / ( x + 40 )
Cross multiply
440 ( x + 40 ) = 760 * x
440 x + 17600 = 760 x
760 x -440 x = 17600
320 x = 17600
/ 320
x = 55 Saleri mph
95 Amadeus mph
