They alternate 3 minutes of walking at 16.40 minutes per mile and jogging for 1 minute at 13.50 minutes per mile.
What is the average speed they complete the mile in?
:
Find the dist walked in 3 min:
= .183 miles walked
Find the dist jogged in 1 min:
= .074 miles jogged
:
Dist traveled after walking 4 times: 4*.183 = .732 mi, 12 min walking
Dist traveled after jogging 3 times: 3*.074 = .222 mi, 3 min jogging

Total distance traveled after 15 minutes: .954 mi, 1 - .954 = .046 mi remain

Find the time to jog the last .046 mi
