Using what formula for its speed?
If it's falling at 10 m/s for 1.5 seconds, why isn't it accelerating?

If gravity is the only force acting on the apple (definition of free fall) then it must be accelerating, and can't be going at 10 m/s for 1.5 seconds (unless it is in equilibrium).
