Question 458087: A bicycle leaves town at 14mph at 8 a.m. A car leaves at 11 a.m., in the same direction at 45 mph. How many minutes after 11 a.m. is it when the car overtakes the bicycle?
Answer by richwmiller(17219)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
from 8 am till 11 am is three hours
the bike had a three hour head start at 14 mph 3*14=42 miles
as the bike is going 14 mph and the car at 45 from that point we need to calculate the gain on the bike.
The car is gaining 45-14 =31 mph.
So how long in minutes will it take the car to make up 42 at 31 mph
42/31*60 about 81 minutes after 11am or about 12:21 pm
