Question 451884: joshua rowed a boat 24 miles downstream in 4 hours. in order to make the return trip upstream in the same amount of time, he doubled his rowing rate(the rate of the boat in still water). find the rate of the current and the rate of the boat in still water on the downstream trip.
Answer by jorel1380(3719) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
s+c=2s-c
24/s+c=4
--------------
4(s+c)=24
s+c=6
c=6-s
s+(6-s)=2s-(6-s)
6=3s-6
3s=12
s=4
c=2
The speed of the boat in still water is 4 mph. The current is 2 mph..
