Question 448674: Emily and Fran live 12 miles apart. Emily starts walking to Fran's house at a rate of 4 mph. Half an hour later, Fran starts jogging towards Emily's house at a rate of 6 mph. How long will Emily walk until she meets Fran?
If you can just show me how to set up the problem or how to put it into an equation i can work it out. I just dont know how to set it up! It would be great to have an answer by the end of the day :)
Thanks
Answer by scott8148(6628) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the distance Emily travels is her time multiplied by her rate
the distance Fran travels is Emily's time (minus half an hour) multiplied by Fran's rate
the two distances sum to 12 miles
equation-wise ___ t(4) + (t - .5)(6) = 12
