Hi,

let x be the maximum speed of the plane and y be the speed of the wind.

Question states*** Note D = r*t

 x + y = 480mph   |2400mi/5hr = 480mph

 x - y = 400mph   |2400mi/6hr = 400mph

    2x = 880   

     x = 440mph, the speed 0f the plane with no wind.  (Wind speed is 40mph)

 2400/6 = 400 mph

2400/5 = 480 mph

The airspeed is the average = (400+480)/2

= 440 mph

The windspeed is the difference = 440 - 400 = 40 mph
