Question 447932: If a boat goes downstream 72 kilometres in 3 hours and upstream 60 kilometres in 6 hours, the rate of the river and the rate of the boat in still water respectively are
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
boat speed = x mph
current speed = y mph
with stream speed = x+y
d= 72
72/(x+y)= 3
divide by 3
24/(x+y)=1
x+y = 24............1
..
60/(x-y) = 6
10/(x-y)=1
x-y =10.............2
add up (1) & (2)
2x= 34
x= 17 mph speed of boat
current speed = 7 mph
