Let r = the rate of the jet plane
Then r/4 = the rate of the prop plane
Since time = distance/rate, we can write the following formula for the time of the trip:
5 = 1800/r + 300/(r/4)
5 = 1800/r + 1200/r
Solve for r:
(1800 + 1200)/r = 5
3000 = 5r
r = 600 mph
Therefore the rate of the jet is 600 mph
