Question 442895: Jenna went kayaking with Tom. They traveled 8 miles upstream. On their way back, they traveled 5 miles downstream. The current has a speed of 1 mile per hour. If Jenna and Tom traveled at an average speed of r miles per hour, how would you find the total time it took them to make one round trip?
Answer by rwm(914) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(r-1)*t=8
(r+1)*T=5
we have 2 equations but three unknowns
TT=t+T
We have 3 equations but 4 unknowns
We can only solve for TT in terms of variables since we don't have enough info to get a number answer.
