Question 435807: An automobile traveled 6 hours at an average speed of 40 miles per hour. It averaged only 30 miles per hour on the return trip. What was the approximate average speed in miles per hour for the round trip?
Answer by jorel1380(3719) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If a car traveled 6 hours at 40 mph, then it traveled 240 miles. This same distance takes 8 hours at 30 mph. To get the average, we take the total mileage, 480, and divide it by the total time, 14 hours.
480/14=34.28571 mph.
