Question 421847: Two trains leave the station at the same time, one heading east and the other west. The eastbound train travels 16 miles per hour slower than the westbound train. If the two trains are 400 miles apart after 2 hours, what is the rate of the eastbound train?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
west bound x mph
east bound x-16
..
They are going away from each other.
So add up their speed.
combined speed = x+x-16
=2x-16
Time = 2 hours
Distance = 400 miles
Distance = speed * time
(2x-16)* 2
4x-32=400
4x=400+32
4x=432
/12
x=108 mph west bound
east bound = 108 -16 = 92 mph
