Question 419712: if I am traveling at 20 mph how many feet do i need to stop on normal road conditions
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
the distance will vary depending on many conditions.
on the average, you can expect stopping distances somewhere on the values in the the table in the following link.
http://www.accidenttech.com/va_code.html
looking at this link, you can see that:
at 20 miles per hour (column 1), you are traveling at 29.3 feet per second (column 2), and your automobile braking distance is 19 feet (column 3) and your reaction distance is 44 feet (column 5) and your total stopping distance is 63 feet (column 6).
disregard columns 4 and 7 since they apply to trucks and not cars.
without taking into account reaction time, then column 3 is the one you would be interested in.
these are nominal times.
conditions on the road and on the vehicle and on the driver have an impact not shown in this table.
