A passenger train leaves New York and travels toward Washington DC at a rate of 50 miles per hour.
One hour later, a super train leaves Washington DC, and travels toward New York
on a parallel track at a rate of 200 miles per hour.
If New York and Washington DC are 225 miles apart, at what point will the two trains pass by each other?
:
Let t = travel time (in hrs) of the fast train when two trains meet
then
(t+1) = travel time of the slow train when they meet
:
When they meet, the total travel distance of the two trains will equal 225 mi
Write a distance equation, Dist = speed * time
:
Slow train dist + fast train dist = 225
50(t+1) + 200t = 225
50t + 50 + 200t = 225
Add the t's, subtract 50 from both sides
250t = 225 - 50
250t = 175
divide both sides by 250
t =
t = .7 hrs, travel time of the fast train
then
1.7 hrs, travel time of the slow train
:
Find the point where they will meet,
50 * 1.7 = 85 mi, from New York
200 *.7 = 140 mi, from Wash DC
--------------------
total dist: 225.0 mi; confirms our solution
:
That wasn't so hard was it? Any questions?
