Question 40966: Leon drove 270 miles to the lodge in the same time as Pat drove 330 miles to the lodge. If Pat drove 10 miles per hour faster than Leon, then how fast did each of them drive?

Let Leon's rate be r. Then Pat's rate is r+10. Now rate * time = distance, or rt=d...thus t = d/r...their times are equal, so we have
270 / r = 330 / r+10 now cross-multiply and solve and get
270(r+10) = 330r
270r + 2700 = 330r
60r = 2700
r = 45
r+10 = 55
