The Jones family drove to Disneyland at 50 miles per hour and retrned on the same route at 40 miles per hour. Find the distance to Disneyland if the total driving time was 7.2 hours.
TO DISNEYLAND DATA:
Distance = ?; rate=50mph; time = x hrs.
TO HOME DATA:
Distance = ?; rate = 40mph; time="7.2-x" hrs.
EQUATION:
distance = rate*time
distance TO DISNEY= distance TO HOMe
50x=40(7.2-x)
50x=288-40x
90x=288
x=3.2 hrs (Time TO DISNEYLAND at 50mph)
Then 50(3.2)= 160 miles (Distance TO DISNEYLAND)
