Two cyclists, 160 miles apart, start riding toward each other at the same time. One cycles 3 times as fast as the other. If they meet 4 hours later, what is the speed (in mi/h) of the faster cyclist?
---
Let slower rate be "x" mph.
Then faster rate is "3x" mph.
----
Their closing rate is x+3x = 4x mph.
----
rate = total distance/total time
rate = 160/4 = 40 mph
---
Solve: 4x = 40 mph
x = 10 mph
3x = 30 mph (faster rate)
