Let x and (23-x) represent the number of 2 pointer's and free throws respectively 

Question states***

  2x + 1*(23-x) = 34

solving for x

       x = 11, the number of 2 pointers.  He made 12 free throws.  (23-11)

CHECKING our Answer***

  2*11 + 12 = 22 + 11 = 34
