Hi
D = r*t (how fast for how long tells us how far)
Total distance is 3 miles.
Note: we need to compare apples to apples when using the distance formula
If speed is in mph, then time must be expressed in hours. 20min = 20/60 = 1/3 hr
Questions states***
jogging + walking
6mph*(1/3)hr + 4mph*t = 3miles
solving for x
2 mi + 4mph*t = 3mi
4mph*t = 1mi
t = (1/4)hr, time spent walking

You jog at a speed of 6 miles per hour for 20 minutes, and you walk at a speed of 4 miles per hour for t minutes. If your combined jogging and walking distance is 3 miles, for how long did you walk?
---------------
Jogging DATA:
rate = 6 mph ; time = 1/3 hr ; distance = (1/3)6 = 2 miles
--------------
Walking DATA:
rate = 4 mph ; time = t/60 hrs ; distance = 4(t/60) = t/15 miles
--------------
Equation:
dist + dist = 3 miles
2 miles + t/15 = 3 miles
t/15 = 1
t = 15 (# of minutes you walked)
