D = r*t

 2hr*x  + 2hr(x+3mph) = 24mi

Solving for x

   4x + 6mi = 24mi

      4x = 18mi

       x = 4.5mph, Hector's speed.  Maria's speed was 7.5mph    (4.5ph + 3mph)

  2hr*4.5mph + 2hr*7.5mph =  9mi + 15mi = 24mi
