Question 383447: A boat traveling at 10 mph can go 20 miles against a current in the same time it can go 60 miles with the current. How fast is the current of this river?
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let current rate = xmph
rate upstream = 10-x
..
time upstream = 20/(10-x)
....
time downstream = 60/(10+x)
..
time downstream = time upstream
20/(10-x)= 60/(10+x)
cross multiply
20(10+x)=60(10-x)
200+20x=600-60x
80x=400
/80
x=400/80
x= 5 mph
