Question 381341: A boat travels 60 miles downstream in the same time it takes to go 36 miles upstream. The speed of the boat in still water is 15mph greater than the speed of the current. Find the speed of the current.
Answer by edjones(8007) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
s=speed of boat, c=speed of the current, t=time
st=distance
s=c+15 in calm water (no current)
s=c+15-c=15 mph going upstream
15t=36
t=2.4 hrs
.
c+15+c=2c+15 mph going down stream.
2.4(2c+15)=60
4.8c+36=60
4.8c=24
c=5 mph
.
