Question 375586: A 700 mile, 6 hour plane trip was flown at two speeds. The first part the average speed was 110 mph and the second part of the trip the average speed was 120 mph. For how long did the plane fly at each speed?
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let x miles be flown at 110 mph
time taken during this part = x/110
..
700-x miles is the next part of the trip
speed = 120 mph
..
time = (700-x)/120
..
Total time = 6 hours
..
First part time + second part time = 6 hours
x/110 + (700-x)/120 = 6
...
(x*120+(700-x)*110) / 110*120= 6
(120x+77000-110x)/110*120 =6
10x+77000 = 6*110*120
-77000
10x=79200-77000
10x=2200
/10
x= 2200/10
x= 220 miles @ 110 mph
Balance 480 miles @ 120 mph
