From a common starting position, willy and jessica ride their bikes in opposite directions. Willy rides 2 km faster than jessica. in 3 hours, the two are 60 km apart. find the average speed of each one.
Let jessica's rate be x km/h
Then willy's rate is x+2 km/h
------
They are separating at a combined rate of 2x+2 km/h
------
Equation:
time*rate = distance
3*(2x+2) = 60
2x+2 = 20
2x = 18
x = 9 km/h (Jessica's rate)
x+2 = 11 km/h (Willy's rate)
