If you make a diagram you can see that the distance from her starting point to the gas station is the hypotenuse of a right triangle with legs 5 and 9.
So we have c^2 = a^2 + b^2 and
c^2 = 5^2 + 9^2 = 25 + 81 = 106
c = square root of 106 or approximately 10.3
