Question 366878: The formula d = r x t is used to determine distance, d given the rate, r, and the time traveled, t.
A. solve the formula for time t. (could you show me how to work out this question?)
B. What is the average speed if you spent 5 hours and 45 minutes on the road and traveled 365.635 miles? ( show all your work please why I can understand how to do it.)
C. If you traveled 19 miles at an average speed of 43 miles per hour, how long would it take you? (Show all your work please.)
I really do need help understanding how to do this. Please help me....

The formula d = r x t is used to determine distance, d given the rate, r, and the time traveled, t.
A. solve the formula for time t. (could you show me how to work out this question?)
Initial formula:
d = rt
The idea is to isolate 't' to one side of the equation. So, we would like to get rid of the 'r', we divide both sides by 'r':
d/r = (rt)/r
Notice the 'r's cancel on the right leaving:
d/r = r (this is what they're looking for)
.
B. What is the average speed if you spent 5 hours and 45 minutes on the road and traveled 365.635 miles? ( show all your work please why I can understand how to do it.)
The 't' (time) in d=rt is in "hours"
So, we must convert "5 hours and 45 minutes" into hours:
45 mins = 45 mins * 1hr/60mins = 45/60 hr = 0.75 hr
That is, 45 mins is the same as "three quarters" (.75) of an hour.
Then 5+.75 =5.75 hours
plug what was given into:
d =rt
365.635=r(5.75)
365.635/5.75=r
63.589 mph = r
.
C. If you traveled 19 miles at an average speed of 43 miles per hour, how long would it take you? (Show all your work please.)
Plug what was given into:
d=rt
19 = 43t
19/43 = t
0.442 hours = t
OR, converting to minutes:
26.5 minutes = t
