An airplane flying at a rate of 500 miles per hour leaves Los Angeles. One-half hour later, a second airplane leaves Los Angeles in the same direction flying at a rate of 600 miles per hour. How long will it take the second airplane to overtake the first?
Plane 1 distance 750miles in 90 minutes
Plane 2 distance 600 miles in 60 minutes
formula: 750 = 60 x t
Am I using the right formula?
-------------------------
That gets t = 12.5 hours, which is not right.
-------------------
Do it like this:
The 1st plane is 250 miles away when the 2nd starts (500 * 0.5)
The 2nd plane gains on it at 100 mph (600 - 500)
250/100 = 2.5 hours
