Paula's one hour head start is a distance of 40 miles (she drives 40 mph)

Dan "catches up" at a rate of 10 mph (50 - 40)

so it takes Dan 4 hr (40 / 10) to catch Paula

40 mi lead
overtake speed 50-40=10 mph
40/10=4 hrs
