Question 35449: I answered these word problems, checked and thought I got them right, but my instructor tells me they are wrong. The answer I got for this one is x=73,
x=73, and x=50

Here's the problem:
A certain building in New York City is in the shape of an isosoles triangle. If the shortest side of the building is 50 feet shorter than the two longer sides, and the perimeter around the building is 196 feet, determine the legnth of the three sides of the building.

Let x = the length of one of the longer sides of the isosceles triangle.
The two long sides together will be 2x.
The short side of the triangle is 50 feet shorter than the two longer sides (together?), so the short side is 2x-50.
The three sides add up to 196 feet.
2x + (2x-50) = 196
4x - 50 = 196
4x = 246
x = 61.5 feet.
So the sides of the triangle are:
61.5 feet.
61.5 feet
73 feet.
