Question 348800: 2 shuttles take off, one .5 hours after the other. The later shuttle travels 300 mph faster than the previous. At 5 hours they are at the same altitude. What is the previous shuttle's speed in mph?
Answer by checkley77(12844)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
D=RT
D=R*5 FOR THE FIRST SHUTTLE.
D=(R+300)(5-.5)
5R=(R+300)4.5
5R=4.5R+1,350
5R-4.5R=1,350
.5R=1,350
R=1.350/.5
R=2,700 MPH ANS. FOR THE RATE OF THE FIRST SHUTTLE.
2,700+300=3,000 MPH. ANS FOR THE SECOND SHUTTLE.
PROOF:
5*2,700=3,000*4.5
13,500=13,500
