Question 347465: A man walks from one town to another in 5 hours. Had he walked of a kilometer faster, he would have reached his destination 36 minutes earlier. Find the distance between the two towns and the rate at which he walked.
Answer by nyc_function(2741) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the speed at which the man traveled be x
Let his speed had he walked a kilometres faster be y
y = x+1.............Equation(1)
5x = 4.4y...........Equation(2)
Sub y in (2),
5x=4.4(x+1)
5x=4.4x+4.4
0.6x=4.4
x=22/3 km/h
D=ST
D=5*22/3
D=110/3 km
Therefore, he walked at a rate of approximately 7.3 km/h and traveled a
distance of approximately 36.7 km
