Question 344165: I need help solving this problem. Please help.
The problem:
Hal hiked half his planned trip the first day. Because he became tired, he covered only half of the remaining distance on the third day. On the fourth day, he hiked three miles, which was one-fifth of the number of miles left. How many miles did he hike during the four days?
I tried doing this equation, but I was not sure if I did it right:
1/2x+1/3x+1/4x+3=15
Answer by josmiceli(19441) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let = length of the planned trip in miles
The 1st day he hiked miles
The remaining distance is miles
On the 3rd day, he hiked half of that, or
miles
So far he has hiked miles
There are miles left
On the 4th day, he hiked miles
Reading carefully, the problem is telling me that
the 3 miles he traveled on day 4 was 1/5 of the
miles left , so
miles is the length of the planned trip
---------------------
Now, going back over the problem:
The 1st day he hiked miles
On the 3rd day, he hiked half of that, or
miles
So far he has hiked miles
and there are miles left
On the 4th day he hiked miles which is
of the miles left, or
So, he hiked of the
mile planned trip
