Answer by ewatrrr(24785)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
NEED TO KNOW:
RATE*TIME = DISTANCE TRAVELED.
LET T REPRESENT THE TIME IT TOOK TO WALK TO SCHOOL.
THE QUESTION STATES THE FOLLOWING TO BE TRUE. ROUND TRIP TOOK 3/2 hrs.
That is: (3/2hr - T) would be the time remaining to ride back.
USING THE DISTANCE FORMULA: WAY TO = WAY BACK
2mi/hr *T = 10mi/hr *(3/2hr -T)
SOLVE:
2mi/hr *T = 15mi/hr -10mi/hr*T
12mi/hr *T = 15mi/hr
T= 15/12 hr or 1 1/4 hrs
T remaining for ride back 1/4 hr
SUBSTITUTING BACK INTO THE DISTANCE FORMULA
10mi/hr * 1/4 hr = 10/4 mi or 2.5 miles is the distance the school is from home!!
