Question 342299: I was walking down the street one day andd a jgger passed me. I was curious to know whether I could figure out how fast the jogger was running, so I started paying attention to where the jogger was. When she passed a light post a little ways in front of me, I began to count seconds. It took me 9 seconds to get to the post. When I reached the pole, I looked up to see that she was just passing a mango tree. I again counted seconds until I reahed the mango tree and it took me 11 seconds. When I reached the fire hydrant, she was passing a phonebooth. It took me 14 seconds to each the phonebooth. I knew that I walked 2 paces in 1 second and my pace was 1 yard lng. Approximately how fast in miles per hour was the jogger moving?

I began to count seconds.
I knew that I walked 2 paces in 1 second and my pace was 1 yard long.
Approximately how fast in miles per hour was the jogger moving?
:
Find the speed of the observer, 2yd per sec, 6 ft/sec
= 4.091 mph hr
:
I think we can find the jogger speed using the time and distances to the pole
and to the mango tree.
Distance to pole: 6 * 9 = 54 ft
Distance to Mango tree: 6 * 11 = 66 ft
:
We can see the observer traveled 54 ft while the jogger traveled 66 ft
Let j = speed of the jogger
write a ratio equation, find the speed in mph
=
cross multiply
54j = 4.091 * 66
54j = 270
j =
j = 5 mph is the jogger speed

Let me know if I screwed this one up.
