John and Karen went to a family reunion. Karen left on Saturday morning traveling 22 miles/hour. John left on Saturday afternoon traveling 55 miles/hour. John traveled 3 hours less than karen. How far did they travel?
-------------
Karen DATA:
rate = 22 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = d/r = x/22 hrs.
--------------------
John DATA:
rate = 55 mph ; distance = x miles ; time = x/55 hrs
-----------------------------
Equation:
Karen time - John time = 3 hrs
x/22 - x/55 = 3 hrs
---
55x - 22x = 3*22*55
33x = 3*22*55
x = 2*55
x = 110 miles (distance they traveled)
