Question 3361: Aviation: The number of miles that remain to be flown by a commerical jet traveling from boston to Los Angeles can be approxiamated by the equation
Miles remaining = 2650-475t
Where t is the number of hours since leaving boston. In how many hours will the plane be 100 miles from Los Angeles: Round to nearest tenth of an hour.

You want to find the time t when the plane has 100 miles remaining using the equation remaining miles = . In the equation, set remaining miles to 100, the equation becomes:

Now we have to manipulate the equation to make it give us a value for tt. In other words, isolate t in the equation.

subtract 100 from both sides and the equation becomes
add 475t to both sides and the equation becomes
divide 475 from both sides and the equation becomes when rounded to the nearest 10th
