By the time Wei-Jen is 5 mi from home, the distance between them is 1 mi more than Alan's distance from home. How far from home is Alan? I did try to solve this problem but i think i missed a step, so it just got me more confused with the problem.

The distance from each to home are the legs of a right triangle.
The distance between them is the hypotenuse of the right triangle.
Use the Pythagorean theorem,

Take it from there and solve for X, Alan's distance from home.
